The other Gokuh by AnnouncerGuy The other Gokuh by AnnouncerGuy
Or rather uh... THE Gokuh, our Gokuh being the other Gokuh.....or whatever. Yeah, I'd been wanting to do some Journey to the West fanart for quite some time, ever since I read an english translation some years back. I really enjoyed it, it's a little like the Odyssey in that it's hella long but at the same time stuff is constantly happening, only JTW is probably more fun (in my opinion). So here I have the four main characters: Son Gokuh the Monkey King who is portrayed as mischievious yet wise (which is strange since he's always a retard in anime), Tripitaka (Xuanzang) who is the virtuous but somewhat faint-hearted priest that frees Gokuh and takes him as his disciple, Pigsy, the second disciple who is somewhat lazy yet loyal, and of course Sandy......nobody knows what the hell Sandy looks like....he was kind of just there.... Fun bunch.

I finally did art, FINALLY!!! School is torture I tell you, absolute torture and all I really wanna do is draw!! I hate society!!!!

done in colored pencil, don't hate me, I know about as much about China as I do about rocket science.....In case you don't know, pretty much nothing.

In the time travel season of Dinosaur King, our main protagonists team up with Dr Z and his Alpha Gang to go to ancient China, where they meet the priest that inspired the story "Journey to the West". The Alpha Gang disguise themselves as the priest and his companions, Sandy, Pigsy, and Monkey King.

I remember seeing the first ten minutes of what i thought had to be the CHEAPEST-LOOKING version of Journey To The West ever filmed, with music stolen from 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the cheesiest looking Gokou costume that made Hanuman from the Thai-Japanese co-production Hanuman & The Six Ultra Brothers look good by comparison. Of course, it was added as filler for a bootleg VHS of some episodes of the Super Sentai series Goseii Sentai Dairanger at the time.

That aside, this is quite an impressive piece. And I see one or two areas where the influence of manga artist Akira Toriyama has found its way into the piece.

May I have permission to feature this on my website for a school project (Mythology final)? I will credit and not lay any claim to this picture. There will be a link leading back to this page.

Sweet. I was wondering where that cute Wukong icon came from.

The book describes Sandy/Sha Wujing with indigo skin, flaming red hair, and eyes like lanterns, but hardly anybody ever draws him like that, unfortunately. Everybody forgets about him but I think he's my favorite character, if only because he was portrayed as such an adorable fop in that "Monkey" TV show.

Yeah, The Journey to the West is fairly popular back in China; they've made several television reditions. [my brother absolutely loves these though they were made a couple years ago and have pretty poor quality.] The story is really very fascinating. I practically gre up on them, being Chinese myself. I had never known the English names though. :]

Son Gokuh was the leader of a tribe-ish thing of monkeys. The legend is that he was born from the heart of a large boulder or something mystical like that. He had super strength so most weapons were too light for him to wield.

Anyhoo, he eventually caused so much havoc with the gods that he was sealed under a mountain to wait for a preist who was on a religious journey and ends up helping and protecting the preist throughout their journey. The pig was once a prince or something and was turned into a pig. And in several stories "Sandy" is a man who lived in the sea and Gokuh fights him and he eventually joins them on their journey.

It's unsanely long, and I'm not even sure I've seen the whole thing.

Wow that was long. Whoops. :]

Sorry to hear about the attitude towards school -- it does pay off in the long run. But enough of that stuff: the drawing itself is near professional illustrator quality. Ever consider illustrating for kids books?

Heh, I'm so behind, I had no idea that Son Goku was based on this "Monkey" until about 2 months ago ^.^; XP I'm ashamed of my background knowledge. The only reason I found out was from watching a film called "Monkey" (teehee great film) and then i researched it! this just sums it up = D Its really cool! Goku (the Dragonball Z version) wears the same outfit as the money in this pic in a few images doesn't he? I swear I've seen him with that outfit on.

Anywho, great pic Announcer!!

Wonderful art! The rolling mountains, the characters with faces all a glow and bursting with character! The posing is also well done, giving visual presence in the piece and more believability to the group.
The style does remind me of Toriyama (who did an off-shoot of or perhapsa just a few images of Goku in that same outfit), that's not a bad thing because he is an original and deserves recognition. Wonderful job, and I hope you persue some more XiYuJi art!

Now, if you excuse me, I'm on a journey to view yer gallery!

You mean Sonson(sp?) right? Great character! I love all those moves you can do with the nyoibou, and yes, you do want to read this. There is an English translation out there simply called "Monkey" that is somewhat incomplete but excellent nonetheless.
