So I've been rewatching the Dragonball series from the begining, because I figured I've taken a long enough break from it, and I just felt like drawing out one of the most memorable scenes in the story for me. Is it weird that this moment sticks out to me? When Gokuh and Kuririn finally get to remove their shells and experience the results by jumping like a mile into the air. It was the first big leap in power in the series and unlike most of the others where the power levels just got out of control, the difference was very obvious and tangible. Besides, this is the period where Gokuh and Kuririn first become friends, which is like one of my favorite things about Dragonball.
Would you believe me if I said I was trying to be a little looser with Toriyama's style and just go with my natural tendencies? Yeah, I guess you wouldn't, but actually I am starting to notice what it is that I do differently and the way I like things to look. I'll probably have a better example sometime soon. Also this was done in nib pen as well and I made a couple gigantic smudges which I'm surprised I was able to correct at all in photoshop. Oh well, I covered everything up with the wonky coloring so it's all good...
I think it is a rather memorable scene and it's one of the rare times that a big leap in power was more than just mere words, as the differences can be seen. A lot of the time later on in the series, a leap in power consisted of Goku being able to beat up an enemy that he couldn't before (thereby making the change rather superficial).

I love this scene too! But I would have to say my favorite scene is near the end when Gokuh is "grown-up" and nobody recognizes him. I love it when Kuririn gives Gokuh a big hug, it makes me teary eyed. ^_^ I like the "wonky" coloring by the way!
I guess the main difference thats apparent to me is that this picture seems more similar to Toriyama's later style. Where as in this part in the series Toriyama drew kids a little chunkier looking. Or at least thats what I think.
I also think you've always kinda drawn Kuririn a little differently.... I can't quite put my finger on it.

The line dividing fantasy and reality is ever so vague...sometimes it isn't there at all.
Or at least thats what I think.
I also think you've always kinda drawn Kuririn a little differently.... I can't quite put my finger on it.
